Add soft lighting to any event with paper star lanterns.

Star-shaped lanterns gained popularity in the United States after their use in Disney’s 2011 movie “Prom.” The traditional Indian decorations add a cheery glow and festive atmosphere to any celebration. You can make your own customized star lanterns inexpensively with any scrapbook paper and a string of holiday lights. To save labor, get a group of students or club members together to help make the stars.

Instructions

    • 1

Print out the star point template (see Resources). If you print out the image as-is, each star point will equal the size of the points in the template. Adjust the size in your printer settings to make the template larger or smaller.

    • 2

Cut out the template along the solid outline and trace it onto a piece of colored scrapbook paper. Cut out the scrapbook paper and make a small cut in the paper between the “C” and “E” tabs.

    • 3

Decorate the star point with colored markers and glitter, if desired.

    • 4

Fold the scrapbook paper, using the dashed lines on the template as a guide for where to fold. If you have trouble, pencil the dashed lines onto the plain side of your scrapbook paper before folding, using a ruler to make the lines straight. Make all folds in the same direction, opposite the decorated side.

    • 5

Glue the “A” tab to side “B.”

    • 6

Make four more star points according to the above directions. After assembling all the points, glue the “C” tab of the first point to the “D” side of the second point and glue the “E” tab of the first point to the “F” side of the second point. Continue gluing the tabs in this pattern until you have a completed star. Wait for the glue to dry before proceeding.

    • 7

Cut a small circle carefully between two of the star’s points. Make the circle slightly smaller than the diameter of your Christmas bulbs at their widest point.

    • 8

Gently slip the star over a Christmas light.

    • 9

Repeat the entire process until the light string is full of paper stars.

Tips & Warnings

  • Use clear light bulbs for the best visual effect.

  • Do not use lights with power greater than 40 watts.
