How to Decorate a Guitar With Tape & Razor
You can look back as far as the 1970s and find guitarists adding personal touches to instruments. For example, you can take a quick look at Eddie Van Halen’s “Frankenstrat” to see that he decorated his guitar with tape and a razor blade. Many budding guitarists and manufacturers alike have duplicated the Franenstrat’s design and look in various forms over the years. You can do a faithful reproduction or come up with designs all your own.

1
Cut a piece of electrical tape approximately 3 feet in length with the utility knife.
-
2
Place the piece of tape across the top of the guitar and wrap the tape around the sides and onto the back. Press the tape firmly against the face to remove air bubbles. Place the tape at any angle or on at any location across the face.

3
Cut a second piece of masking tape to a length of 3 feet and then cut down the length of the tape with the utility knife to make the tape thinner in width. You can use both pieces of tape on the guitar. Place the pieces of tape onto the face of the guitar in different locations.

Repeat Steps 1 through 3 with the same color tape until you are happy with the first layer. Intersect the taped lines wherever you see fit to create interesting angles. The final result is up to your taste. If you choose, you can use multiple, different-size, tape thicknesses or create your own by cutting the tape.

5
Add a second layer of intersecting tape lines with a different color electrical tape. As an example, the EVH Frankenstrat, used white tape for the first layer and black tape for the second layer. Install the tape in the same manner as you installed the first layer. Intersect the second layer of tape with the first layer until you are satisfied with the result.
