How to Attach Felt Applique Initials

Cutting applique details from felt gives you a firm fabric to work with, as well as one that won't fray, which could be an important consideration when making applique initials. Capital letters may be slightly easier to work with than lower case, as capitals tend to have fewer curls and scrolls. Choose a simple font if you want to create a strong, modern look to the initial, or go for something more cursive for a romantic, traditional appeal.

Instructions

1. Decide where on your project you want the initials and how far apart you want them to be.

2. Pin the initials in place, laying the pins along the shape of the initial so you don't distort any of the long tails of the letters.

3. Stitch around the outside edges of the initials using a small, even running stitch. For letters with two separate edges, such as O's or B's, stitch the inside edges first then smooth the letter out against the surface of the project before stitching around the edge.

• You can use fabric glue to attach fancy applique initials that have many curves or very slender tails.

• Alternative stitches include whip stitch or blanket stitch.
