Begin planning well in advance to successfully execute the surprise party. Reserve his favorite restaurant to host the event. If you choose an off-site location, you will not have to worry about hiding cars around the block, as you would if the event was hosted at your house. Reserve enough time for your husband to mix and mingle with all the guests.

Recruit help for execution on the day of the event so you can arrive with your husband. He will be less suspicious if you suggest dinner and travel to the venue together than under other arrangements. Ask a friend or family member to arrive at the restaurant early to decorate, and ask another person to bring the cake. Also, arrange for one person to photograph or videotape his arrival and another person to organize guests and to keep in secret communication with you during your travel to the restaurant.

Invite guests at least four weeks ahead of time to maximize attendance. Invite the obvious people — family, friends, neighbors and coworkers — but also invite old friends of your husband. Track down his high school buddies, college friends and former coworkers with whom he was close. He will be surprised to see faces from a past life. Emphasize on the invitation that the party is a surprise. Provide a secret email address to which the guests may RSVP. Avoid providing your phone number on the invitation so no one inadvertently calls the house and raises suspicions.

Incorporate your husband’s favorite hobbies and interests into the party. For instance, coordinate the decorations based on the colors of his favorite sports team. In addition, distribute party favors based on his favorite hobby. For instance, give boxes of golf tees if he is a golf fanatic.

Suggest having dinner at his favorite restaurant a week in advance of the event. That way, he will plan for it. If you wait until the last minute to suggest dinner and he is busy with work or other commitments, you may have to coax him to his surprise party, which may cause suspicion.
