How to Conduct a Phone Screen Interview

How to Conduct a Phone Screen Interview thumbnail
Phone interviews can be used to eliminate some job candidates.

In many cases, a large number of applications are received for a limited number of job openings. Personal interviews can be a time-consuming process for employers and prospective employees. Phone screen interviews are conducted to gather basic information from applicants and enable employers to select only the most qualified individual candidates for face-to-face interviews. Candidates may be eliminated over the phone for reasons such as not being able to work the hours required, candidates no longer being interested in the position or candidates not having the necessary skills to fulfill the position. Phone screen interviews typically last no more than 15 minutes.

Instructions

    • 1

Prepare a script to use during the phone interviews. Include basic questions, such as "Are you still interested in the position?"; "Why are you interested in the position?"; "What skills do you obtain that will allow you to do the job?"; "What hours are you available to work?"; and "What knowledge do you have that pertains to the position?" The phone interview should cover only basic questions and confirm information that has been supplied on the candidate's resume. More in-depth questions will be conducted during face-to-face interviews with selected candidates.

    • 2

Schedule a time with the applicant for the phone interview. By prescheduling, you will be able to have an uninterrupted conversation, and both the employer and employee will be able to prepare for the interview. You may need to schedule interviews after business hours for candidates who are currently employed.

    • 3

Introduce yourself to the applicant and explain the reason for your call. Give the candidate the basic job description of the position available. Ask the candidate the questions that you have prepared in your script. Make note of the responses in order to evaluate the applicants. Ask the applicant if he has any questions concerning the job opening.

Tips & Warnings

  • Conduct the phone interview in a quiet area without background noise.

  • Do not get off-topic during the phone interview.

  • Explain that more details of the position will be discussed if the candidate is selected for a face-to-face interview.
