How to Check a Pool Cue for Straightness

If your pool cue isn't straight, it could affect your performance on the pool table.

Pool, also often referred to as billiards, is a popular game played with a cue, or long shaft, that is used to hit balls around the pool table. The constant impacts with balls, along with various manufacturing inconsistencies and material defects, can all cause pool cues to warp and bend over time. A warped or bent pool cue will negatively affect the quality of your shots. Pool cues should be routinely checked to make sure they are straight.

Instructions

The Roll Method

1. Lay your pool cue on the surface of the pool table.

2. Roll the pool cue along the surface of the table, via the fat end of the pool cue.

3. Look for any inconsistencies or bumps as the pool cue rolls along the pool table surface. Inconsistencies will be an indication that your pool cue is not straight.

The Sighting Method

1. Hold the butt of the pool cue up to your eye, and hold the other end out in front of you with your other hand.

2. Sight down the length of the pool cue, slowly rotating it.

3. Look for any bumps or inconsistencies in the shaft of the pool cue. Inconsistencies will be an indication that your pool cue is not straight.
