How to Crochet in the Top of a Beginning Chain Stitch
A crochet pattern starts with a chain stitch. When you create a crochet chain, you are setting the width of your piece and creating the base stitches into which you will work your crochet stitches. When working in the round, it is necessary to join the last stitch in every row with the top of the chain stitch that began that row. Accomplish this by counting the stitches in the chain to make sure you are working into the correct one.

1
Chain the number of stitches required by your pattern for working a row in the round. For double crochet, this will be three stitches.
-
2
Work as many stitches into each stitch of the previous row as your pattern calls for. Crochet up to and including the last stitch in the previous round.

-
3
Count the number of stitches in the chain. Each stitch in the chain will look like a vertical letter V.
-
4
Insert your hook into the top stitch of the chain.
-
5
Wrap the hook and pull the wrap through both the top chain stitch and the stitch currently on your hook, joining the round.
