How to Connect a Chain Stitch to Form a Loop When Crocheting
A chain stitch is the first stitch made with a crochet hook. It is the foundation to every crochet project. The chain stitch creates a row of anchor stitching where the first stitch of the crochet panel is connected. Chain stitches create a long rope-like anchor row or an anchor row that creates a loop or circle. Make a loop or circle from a group of chain stitches at least four stitches long. The process is very simple and easy to learn. The same process is used for any type of yarn or size of crochet hook.

1
Tie a slipknot in the yarn approximately 2 inches from the end. Side the slipknot over the end of the crochet hook.
-
2
Pull the back loop over the front loop to create a chain stitch. Loop the yarn again. Repeat the process until the chain is 12 chains long.

-
3
Insert the end of the crochet hook through the center of the first chain stitch.
-
4
Wrap the yarn around the end of the crochet hook.
-
5
Pull the loop through the chain stitch and through the loop on the crochet hook shaft. A circle is created. Steps 4 and 5 create a slip stitch.
