DIY Clay

Homemade clay is fun to make and play with.

Making your own clay is a great rainy day activity, and can be done with few inexpensive and simple to use ingredients. The clay is great for kids because it is non-toxic, and also costs you much less money than if you were to purchase modeling clay. Another perk about making your own clay is you can customize the color and create the exact amount you wish to use. This recipe yields 1 lb. of clay, but can be easily doubled to yield 2 lbs.

  • 1 cup baking soda
  • 1/2 cup cornstarch
  • 2/3 cup cold water
  • Food coloring (optional)

Instructions

    • 1

Combine 1 cup baking soda, 1/2 cup cornstarch and 2/3 cup cold water in a medium saucepan. If you wish to add color, squirt in food coloring little by little until you reach the preferred intensity of color.

    • 2

Set the heat on the stove to medium and stir constantly until the mixture begins to bubble. As you stir, spoon out any larger lumps that refuse to break down.

    • 3

Continue to cook the clay until the consistency is similar to that of mashed potatoes. Pour the hot clay on to a large plate and cover with a cool, damp piece of cloth.

    • 4

Wait for the clay to cool completely. Sprinkle the counter with some flour and place the cooled clay on top.

    • 5

Knead the clay until it is pliable. You can use the clay at any time.

Tips & Warnings

  • Store the clay in an airtight container in a cool, dry place. It keeps for up to 2 months.
