How to Remove Chrome Vehicle Molding

How to Remove Chrome Vehicle Molding thumbnail
Exterior trim, such as chrome molding, can be removed from a car by using plastic tools.

Vehicle molding on cars adds shape and form to the body, and can be painted to either match the car’s color or contrast it. Chrome vehicle molding serves the latter purpose, visually emphasizing the curves and strokes of the car’s body. Removing the vehicle molding, to either replace or polish it, can be done with a simple set of plastic tools.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Begin to work from one corner of the car, slowly sliding the plastic tool underneath the molding and gently prying up one end -- to look between the molding and the car’s body. Molding is generally attached to the car’s body with plastic clips that insert into the body panels, so look for these as you slowly pry away part of the molding.

    • 2

Locate the first clip and begin to pry the molding away from the car’s body using the tool. The clip will eventually pop out when given enough gentle force. Put this clip in a container, such as a coffee can, for future use.

Work your way around the car, locating clips and gently popping them out of place. Once all the clips from a piece of molding are removed, you can simply pull the molding from the car. Set it carefully down on a set of towels, so as not to scratch the chrome finish.

Pry each piece of molding away from the car, clip by clip, until all the vehicle’s chrome molding is on the towel and all the fastener clips are in a container.
