How to Get Better Tone on an Alto Saxophone
Tone is the overall quality of the sound you make when you play an instrument. For beginners, obtaining a good tone on an alto saxophone is difficult. The alto sax is smaller and emits notes that sound higher than a tenor saxophone. Obtaining a quality tone is only achieved by practicing every day. Practice some common exercises to improve your tone.

1
Suck your thumb as hard you can. When you suck in, hold it for three seconds, then release. Repeat this five times every day. This exercise helps build your embouchure strength, which is the tightening of facial muscles as you play a woodwind instrument.

2
Blow up a party balloon, deflate it and repeat. Take the deepest breath you can and exhale into the balloon. Try to blow up the balloon with as few breaths as possible. This exercise will improve your breath control, lung capacity and stamina.

3
Put your top teeth on the mouthpiece when you play. Putting your top teeth on the mouthpiece helps properly align your mouth with the mouthpiece. Misalignment may lead to poor tone quality.
-
4
Put no more than half of your bottom lip over your teeth when you play. Too much lip contact interferes with your ability to play a quality tone. Also, keep the corners of your mouth tight and firmly pressed against the sides of the mouthpiece when you play for the same reason.

5
Level your chin when you play and keep it straight. As you move your chin, the muscles in your face and neck are strained, which alters your breathing. Keep your chin straight and level while you play to avoid involuntarily changing the tone.

6
Equip your sax with a mouthpiece that fits comfortably in your mouth. Mouthpieces come in different shapes and sizes to accommodate mouths of all kinds. Choose a mouthpiece that isn’t so wide that it hurts the corners of your mouth or so thick that it hurts your teeth.
