How to Remove the Activator Cap on a GE Washing Machine

General Electric top-loading washing machines have an agitator in the center of the wash tub. The agitator rotates as the washer runs, moving the clothes throughout the wash tub. If the agitator stops rotating, it may be necessary to remove it. The agitator is secured in place by a single bolt. To access the bolt, you must first remove the detergent dispenser, followed by the agitator cap. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Unplug the washing machine from the wall outlet before performing any type of service.

    • 2

Open the washer lid to expose the agitator.

    • 3

Remove the dispenser from the top of the agitator. Some dispensers have a lock ring on the bottom of the cup that secures the dispenser to the top of the agitator. To remove, squeeze the lock ring and rock the dispenser cup back and forth to remove. If there is no lock ring, grasp the dispenser with both hands and rock it back and forth to remove.

    • 4

Grasp the agitator cap and pull it straight off the top of the agitator. If the cap is difficult to remove, use a flat screwdriver to pry it off.
