How to Make a Double Crochet Shawl

Cold weather and rising heating costs often combine to make homes chillier than before. Many families are wearing layers of clothing inside to compensate for the lower indoor temperature. One garment that's often welcome is a soft and cozy shawl. Beginning crocheters can create a simple shawl in about a weekend using only simple chain stitch and double crochet. Custom-make your shawl to fit your body and color preferences, or create one as a gift for a friend or loved one. The lacy design keeps the shawl from being heavy, but the soft mohair yarn makes it warm.

Instructions

    • 1

Make a loop at the end of one strand of yarn and insert the end of the crochet hook into it. Make chain stitches in the yarn until the chain measures across your shoulders from fingertip to fingertip.

    • 2

Turn and start in the fourth chain from the hook for your first stitch. Make a decrease as your first stitch in this row. Double crochet until two loops are left on the hook. Start a double crochet in the next stitch and work it until there are three loops left on the hook. Yarn over and pull the yarn through all three loops.

    • 3

Double crochet all the way across the chain until you reach the last two chains. Make a decrease in the last two stitches. Chain three and turn the work.

    • 4

Make a decrease as the first stitch in the row. Double crochet all across the row until you reach the last two stitches. Make a decrease as the last stitch in the row.

    • 5

Continue crocheting in this manner until you reach the point there are no stitches left. Each row will be shorter than the previous one, creating a decreasing triangle shape. When you reach endpoint, cut the yarn and pull it through the stitch to secure the work.

Tips & Warnings

  • Make large tassels and attach one to each of the three triangle points for a decorative touch.

  • Make a smaller shoulder shrug by creating an original chain that measures from elbow to elbow.
