How to Make a Ragged Edge on Watercolor Paper

Watercolor paper comes in different weights and surfaces; this paper has to be fairly sturdy and thicker than ordinary paper so that the paints do not bleed through to the other side. You can give your watercolor paper a rustic or antique look by creating a ragged edge on the paper; this can be achieved by using a controlled open flame.

Instructions

    • 1

Light your lighter or strike a match.

    • 2

Hold one corner of the watercolor paper up to the flame, letting the flame catch the paper. Move the watercolor paper's edge across the flame. Do not catch the paper on fire.

    • 3

Repeat Step 2 for the other edges of the watercolor paper.

    • 4

Rub the edges of the watercolor paper down with water to removed the charred portions of the paper's edges. The paper will now have a ragged, antique looking edge.
