How to Increase the Volume of Songs With Audacity

Audacity is a free audio editing and recording software for Mac OSX and Windows operating systems. When you upload audio in Audacity, sometimes the volume may be slightly lower than you'd like. Once uploaded, the waveform length on the program's timeline gives you an idea of how low or loud your audio clip is. A very short or small waveform pattern means the clip needs amplitude. Giving your song a volume boost is quick and simple.

Instructions

    • 1

Launch your Audacity audio project if you haven't already done so. You should see your project's waveform on the timeline.

    • 2

Click and drag your mouse inside the waveform to select the area you want to increase volume. Highlight the entire song if you want increase volume all around. Alternatively, press "Ctrl," and "A" together to highlight the entire clip. Once selected, the area becomes darker to highlight the selection.

    • 3

Click the "Effect" menu on the top, and click "Normalize" to increase the volume reasonably without distorting the sound.

    • 4

Click the "Effect" menu, and click "Amplify" if you want an alternative option. Increase amplitude in small increments of five to 10 dB. Keep going until the waveform's highest peaks reach the top, or the lowest peaks reach the bottom. Don't let it cross the 1.0 or -1.0 limits; otherwise the sound will sound terrible.
