Sewing a Scarf From a Shirt
We all have old shirts languishing in our closets and drawers. Whether you just tired of wearing the same shirt or it no longer fits correctly, shirts can be recycled into stylish winter garments. Scarves keep the cold air from touching our throats while adding style and pizzazz to cold-weather outfits. A bit of sewing experience and some sharp scissors can take that old, used shirt from a waste of space to a flirty and unique scarf.

1
Lay your shirt face up on a flat even surface. Cut off the body of the shirt just below the armpit line to get one large rectangle of fabric. Throw the top of the shirt to the side and keep the main body of the shirt in front of you.
-
2
Fold the top, open raw edge of the body of the shirt over to meet the bottom hem of the shirt. Both open ends should meet. Cut along the fold you just created. You should now have two matching rings of fabric.

3
Cut along the side seam of each tube of fabric to create two long strips of fabric. Lay one strip of fabric face up on a flat surface. Place the second strip of fabric face down on top of the first strip of fabric.
-
4
Sew along the two short edges of the layered strips on each end to create one long, connected tube. Trim off the excess thread. Leave the edges unfinished if you are creating a scarf from T-shirt material.

5
Create a rolled hem along the top and bottom edges of the tube scarf. Roll over 1/4 inch of fabric onto itself all the way around the circle. Roll over another 1/4 inch of fabric to hide the raw edge. Pin in place as you complete the rolled hem. Sew along the pinned edge using a sewing machine to create a finished hem. Repeat on the other long, raw edge of the scarf. You should now have a long circular scarf with two rolled, finished hems and two short connecting seams.

6
Turn the tube scarf right side out by flipping the seams to face inward. Drape around your neck two or three times to create a loopy, dramatic effect.
