Instructions

    • 1

Mix and bake yellow cake mix in two round 9-inch cake pans according to package directions. Cool the cakes in the pans on a wire rack for 15 minutes. Turn the cake pans upside down and tap gently with a table knife to remove the cakes onto the wire rack.

    • 2

Place the cakes on a cutting board after they have completely cooled. Cut a layer off the top of each cake with a serrated knife to create flat, level tops. Stack the two round cake layers on top of each other.

    • 3

Locate the center of the cake and mark with a toothpick. Begin at the center and cut a wedge from the edge of the cake for Pac-Man’s open mouth. Unstack the two cake layers on the cutting board and brush crumbs from the cakes using a pastry brush.

    • 4

Stir together white frosting and a few drops of yellow food coloring in a mixing bowl. Repeat, adding color a few drops at a time until the frosting is the correct shade of yellow that you want for frosting your Pac-Man cake.

    • 5

Place one cake layer on a round cake stand or serving platter on which you will serve the cake. Frost the top of the cake with the yellow frosting using a spatula or frosting spreader. Center the second cake layer on top of the first, lining up the wedge sections.

    • 6

Frost the entire cake with yellow frosting, starting with the top. Fit a frosting bag with a star tip and fill the bag with chocolate frosting. Place a dot approximately one inch from the center of the wedge to mark Pac-Man’s eye.

    • 7

Create Pac-Man’s eye with chocolate icing using the star-tipped frosting bag. Add enough stars to create a circle until his eye is the size you want. Decorate the bottom of the cake with a ring using the remaining chocolate frosting.

Tips & Warnings

  • Use a biscuit cutter or circular cookie cutter to cut a circle from the wedge instead of discarding. Frost the circle with yellow frosting and place inside the wedge-cut area as a pellet for Pac-Man to eat.

  • Frosting the cake before it cools completely will melt the frosting and make the layers unstable.
