Instructions

    • 1

Locate items that have been damaged by looking for ragged holes in clothing. Moths favor animal-based materials such as wool, silk, leather or feathers. Sweaters and blankets are prime targets but moths can infest carpets, pillows or even toys made of these materials so the search for the source should not be limited to the closet. Moths prefer to feed in dark and undisturbed areas.

    • 2

Remove clothing or other items in the infested area and launder to remove eggs or larvae and perspiration odors that attract moths. Woolen and leather clothing can be stored in tight fitting containers in which you have placed a cedar block. Moths do not like the strong smell of cedar nor do they like the smell of cloves. A sachet bag of cloves will ward off moths and make your clothing smell better than using moth balls.

    • 3

Vacuum the infested area, being sure not to miss the tight corners and edges of carpet. Put a couple of drops of dish liquid into a small bowl of water and leave in the area. Place a night light near the bowl. The moths will be attracted to the light and eventually fall into the water and drown.

Prevent future outbreaks by keeping clothing laundered after each use to avoid traces of body oil or food that attract moths. Keep quiet areas well-vacuumed. Sprinkle cloves around the edges of the closet floor. Hang cedar blocks from the closet rods and in attics and basements.

Tips & Warnings

  • Check under sofa cushions, the toy box and all quiet areas where items may be stored. Piano or organ felts have even been known to be a source of infestation.

  • Moth balls are popular to use to repel moths. However, the risks associated with moth balls should rule it out for someone wishing to stick to a natural solution. Moth balls have been associated with respiratory problems and if ingested may cause illness or death.
