How to Crochet a Seed Stitch Ear Flap Hat
Texture and dimension characterize the seed stitch pattern and, when used to make garments or blankets, the seed stitch ensures warmth and durability. By alternating single- and double-crochet stitches across each row, the crochet seed stitch looks very similar to the knitted seed stitch. Create an ear flap hat using a combination of standard crochet stitches and the seed stitch. Work the crown of the hat using traditional stitches, then switch to the seed stitch for the bulk of the hat and ear flaps.

Hat Pattern
-
1
Chain five stitches and slip stitch in the fifth chain from the hook using the size F hook to form a loop. Work 10 double-crochet stitches, spaced evenly around the loop. Place a yarn marker to mark the beginning of the loop.
-
2
Work three double-crochet stitches in each double-crochet from the previous round. Attach the final double-crochet to the first with a slip stitch. Chain three stitches and move the marker up one row.
-
-
3
Make two double-crochets in the next stitch and work one double-crochet in the following stitch. Continue this pattern of two double crochet, one double-crochet, until you work all the way around the piece. Attach the final double-crochet to the first with a slip stitch, chain three stitches, and move the marker up one row.
-
4
Work two double-crochets in the next stitch, and work one double-crochet, in each of the next two stitches. Continue this pattern until you work all the way around the piece. Finish the row as in Step 3, chain three stitches, and move the marker up one row.
-
5
Create the next two rounds in the same manner as in Step 4, but increase the number of stitches receiving only one double crochet. For the fifth round, work two double-crochets in one stitch, then one double-crochet in each of the next three stitches. For the sixth round, work two double-crochets in one stitch, then one double-crochet in each of the next four stitches.
-
6
Chain two stitches to begin round seven, working the seed stitch to create the main body of the hat. Create the seed stitch by working a single-crochet in the first stitch and a double-crochet in the next. Continue this alternating pattern around the ring.
-
7
Connect the final crochet stitch to the first in the ring with a slip stitch and chain two. Begin the next round with one double-crochet in the first stitch and a single-crochet in the next. Continue to alternate stitches as you work around the ring.
-
8
Repeat Steps 6 and 7 six times, resulting in a total of 20 complete rounds. Fasten off the yarn, leaving a long tail for weaving in.
Ear Flap Pattern and Finishing
-
9
Chain 15 stitches. Using the seed stitch pattern, work one single-crochet stitch in the second chain from the hook. Double-crochet in the next stitch and continue to alternate between single and double-crochet as you work across the row. Chain one, and turn the piece over.
-
10
Begin the next row with a double-crochet and continue the seed stitch pattern. Repeat the seed stitch pattern until you complete a total of seven rows. Fasten off the yarn, leaving a long tail for weaving in.
-
11
Repeat Steps 1 and 2 to create a second ear flap.
-
12
Attach the ear flaps to each side of the completed hat, using matching colored yarn, a large-eye blunt needle and mattress stitch. For the mattress stitch, with needle pointing up, pick up the edge of the first stitch of the ear flap, then pick up the corresponding stitch on the hat itself, tugging gently to pull the ear flap and hat together.
-
13
Repeat connecting stitches for each row as you move across the ear flap. Tug the stitches gently after every three or four rows to pull the edges together snugly, being careful not to over tighten. Fasten off the yarn at the end of the ear flap. Weave in all yarn ends with the large-eye blunt needle, and clip any remaining strings of yarn.

Tips & Warnings
Create ties for the ear flaps by chaining 82 stitches, working one double-crochet in the third chain from the hook, and working one double-crochet in each stitch across the chain. Fasten off and weave in yarn ends. Use the mattress stitch as described for the ear flaps to attach the ties.
Check your gauge before beginning the project, and as you progress through each strip. Gauge for this project equals 17 double-crochet stitches per 3 inches, and 4 rows per 2 inches.
