Transform souvenir T-shirts into keepsake quilts.

T-shirt memory quilts are a innovative way to encapsulate years of family vacations and other special events. Present the loving gift to a daughter, filled with her lifetime of fond memories, as she heads off to college for a gift that will keep her body warm as well as her heart. The memory quilt also makes a thoughtful gift for a parent or grandparent. Fill the quilt with pieces of photo T-shirts, souvenir shirts and other collectible shirts for a quilt they will cherish forever.

Instructions

    • 1

Spread out the T-shirts on your work surface. Measure the size of the largest keepsake section from one of the T-shirts. This is the size square you will use for all of the squares.

    • 2

Cut out the square from the first shirt and then use it as a template to cut the keepsake squares from the other shirts. For a large 60-inch by 72-inch quilt, you will need 30 cut-outs that are 12 inches square.

    • 3

Lay the squares in rows on your work surface. For the large quilt, lay 5 squares across for each row. Make 6 rows and arrange the rows into a rectangle. Sew the individual squares together with a whipstitch.

    • 4

Cut a piece of fabric for the backing. Cut the backing to the same size as the quilt and lay it on top of the wrong side of the quilt. Sew around the outer edges to keep the two layers together.

    • 5

Cut four pieces of binding tape to make smooth edges for the quilt. Cut one piece for each quilt side and slide the sides of the quilt into the folds in the pieces of tape. Sew a running stitch or decorative top stitch through all layers, all the way around.
