How to Get FM Band From an Aerial Antenna
Frequency Modulation (FM) is a communications method in which data is impressed onto an alternating-current wave by varying the frequency of the wave. The FM band transmits analog television channels and FM radio and two-way radio transmissions. The FM band is in the middle of the VHF television band. Television stations use wide-band FM; radio transmission uses less bandwidth. The style and direction of the FM antenna (aerial) used to receive FM signals is critical to getting quality reception. The mounting height and placement of outside antennas are also key to receiving a crisp signal.
Things You'll Need
- FM antenna
- Antenna rotor (optional)
- Radio or tuner with a connection for an external antenna
- Coaxial cable

1
Determine the type of outside antenna that best meets your FM needs. Large, roof-top, directional antennas typically out-perform non-directional antennas. If the signal you wish to receive is from one radio station, you can purchase a stationary antenna. If you wish to tune-in signals from various radio transmission sites, you will need to mount the antenna on a rotor which pivots, allowing it to change direction and aim at specific stations.

2
Mount the antenna high enough for the signal to clear objects that may block transmission. Radio waves travel is straight lines. Trees, buildings and other objects between the radio station tower and your home receiving antenna will block the signal. Your chances of receiving a clear signal increase with the height of the antenna.

Run a well-shielded coaxial cable from the antenna to your tuner or radio. A good quality coaxial cable will reduce signal loss and static. Coaxial cable is superior to ribbon cable for this application. A balun, which is an electrical transformer, may have to be used on both ends of the cable. Check your antenna and receiver instruction manuals for details. Connect coaxial cable only to the terminals marked "75 ohms." If the terminals are marked "300 ohms," a balun must be used between the cable and the terminals.

Connect the adapters on one end of the cable to the antenna; connect the other end to the cable input on the back of the tuner or radio. Turn on the device and tune in the station at which your antenna is aimed.

Tips & Warnings
Yagi style antennas are available in dozens of styles. They range in price from $25 to $200.
An antenna designed for FM only will give you a cleaner signal than a combination FM-TV antenna.
Coaxial cable is sold at electronics stores.
A home with a metal roof or metal siding will block FM signals.
Roof-top antennas should be equipped with lightning protection.
To prevent injury, consider having your antenna and rotor installed by a professional.
