How to Make a M4R File in iTunes
M4R files are the file type used on the Apple iPhone as ringtones. It is possible to make ringtones out of sections of your favorite songs by converting the file type in iTunes before syncing the files onto the iPhone. You will need to adjust the length of the track to 30 seconds or under to ensure that it will be played on the iPhone.

Launch iTunes by double-clicking on the iTunes icon.

Right-click on the song that you wish to make into an M4R file. Click on "Get Info."

Click on the "Options" tab. Select the "Start time" in the track you would like the ringtone to start from and "Stop Time" you would like it to finish on. The length of this should be 30 seconds or less. Click "OK."

Right-click on the song again. Click on "Create ACC Version." This will create a new version of the song with the 30 second period specified. Locate this song on iTunes and right-click on it. Select "Show in Finder."

Right-click on the file name in Finder or Windows Explorer. Change the file extension from ".mp3" or ".m4a" to ".m4r." Click the "Use .m4r" button when prompted if you would like to change the file extension.

Double-click on the file in "Finder" to re-import it into iTunes under the new file extension.
