Learn proper cleaning techniques for raw brass.

Maintaining the youthful finish of raw brass trumpets can be done by following the correct cleaning methods. While raw brass trumpets give players a musical edge for creating warm sounds, the gold and silver polished finishes can tarnish very quickly. The tarnish on the raw brass trumpet is a natural reaction to the brass being exposed repeatedly to the air. Trumpets can be cleaned and maintained by using a variety of items such as vinegar, dishwashing soap and lubricating polishes.

Instructions

  1. Cleaning Using Vinegar

    • 1

Mix 2 cups of vinegar with 1 cup of water into a container. It is important to make sure that the container is big enough to fit the entire trumpet in.

    • 2

Place the trumpet into the container and allow it to sit in the solution for two to four hours.

    • 3

Remove the trumpet from the solution and quickly rinse it with cold water. Dry the trumpet with a soft cloth. Buff the trumpet by moving the cloth in circles until you see the natural shine of the brass.

    Cleaning Using Dishwashing Soap

    • 4

Fill a bathtub or large container with warm water. Using hot water will cause the raw brass to change colors and possibly tarnish more. Squeeze in the dishwashing liquid until you see bubbles start to form at the top of the water.

    • 5

Disassemble the trumpet before placing it into the water. Check closely to make sure there is no fabric on the horn before placing it into the water -- it will cause mold.

    • 6

Clean each part of the trumpet with a soft cloth; clean the values of the trumpet thoroughly. Use a soft cloth to dry the trumpet off before you reassemble it.

    Lubricating the Trumpet

    • 7

Hold the trumpet at a 45-degree angle facing away from you. Unscrew the “top cap” from the trumpet and lift the direct value from the casing.

    • 8

Place the valve oil on and around the valve before allowing it to slide back down. Turn the valve to the right until you hear a click; this means the valve is in the correct play.

    • 9

Allow the trumpet to dry completely before using.

Tips & Warnings

  • Greasing the slides of your trumpet will prevent "stuck sides."

  • Saliva causes mineral deposits to build up in the trumpet.
