How to Know if the Balance Ring on a Washing Machine Is Working
The balance ring is a safety device that prevents a washing machine from vibrating excessively or "walking" across the floor if it becomes unbalanced. Partially filled with salt water and welded at both ends, the balance ring is able to correct a 5-pound unbalanced load without causing the machine to walk across the floor. There are several indications that the balance ring is faulty -- keep an eye out in case you experience problems. Does this Spark an idea?

1
Watch for excessive vibration from the washing machine during a cycle. Most often, balance issues are due to uneven flooring, heavy items in the drum or poorly adjusted feet on the washer. Movement and vibration on a fully balanced dryer may indicate a faulty balance ring.

2
Listen for a knocking sound during the wash cycle. The balance ring prevents the clothes basket from banging around inside the appliance during a high- or low-speed spin. A defective balance ring may cause a repetitive bang or click as the drum spins.

Run the washing machine empty and observe its behavior. A balanced washing machine should not "walk" or slowly shift across the floor due to vibration. A washer that walks when it's empty may have a damaged balance ring.
