How to Make a Foam Duck

Make your own foam duck.

Foam ducks are useful when hunting. They attract fowl to the area, allowing you to shoot them with ease. Foam duck decoys are available at most hunting stores, but if you want an extra challenge, you can carve your own out of a block of foam. Carving a foam duck is not difficult, but it does take a fair amount of patience to coax the shape out of the block.

Instructions

    • 1

Sketch the outline of the duck onto all six sides of a foam block with a pencil. You will draw the outline from all six vantage points: front, back, top, bottom, right side and left side.

    • 2

Cut away the excess foam with an electric carving knife to create a crude, duck-like form. Do not worry about detail at this point, you are simply removing the bulk of the foam you do not need.

    • 3

Shape the foam with a stiff wire brush, removing any remaining unneeded foam and refining the duck form. Each scrape with the brush will remove a bit of foam.

    • 4

Sand the duck with 220-grit sandpaper to finish smoothing the surface and remove the heavy marks left behind by the wire brush.

    • 5

Brush a coat of white glue onto the foam to seal the surface. Allow the glue to dry.

    • 6

Paint the duck with acrylic paint as desired. Allow the paint to dry, then spray on two coats of acrylic enamel sealer.
