How to Merge Songs in Audacity

The multi-track environment in the open-source audio editing software Audacity allows you to import multiple sound files, arrange them and then mix them into one audio file. You can mix the audio so that it plays simultaneously if, for example, you want to mix a vocal track with an instrumental. You can also arrange the songs so that they play consecutively once they're merged. Audacity supports many common audio file formats, including WAV and AIFF, and is free to download and use.

Instructions

    • 1

Start Audacity. Open the "File" menu, hover the mouse over "Import" and select "Audio." Locate the first song you want to merge, and double-click it to import it. Repeat the process for as many songs as you want to merge; Audacity imports each song into its own audio track.

    • 2

Click the "Time Shift" button in the main Audacity toolbar. Click and drag the audio waveforms to set their position. If you want the end of one song to overlap the beginning of the next, for example, position the second song so that the beginning of its waveform overlaps the end of the first.

    • 3

Press "Ctrl" and "A" simultaneously to select all of the songs. Open the "File" menu and click "Export."

    • 4

Type a name for the merged songs in the "File name" box. Select the audio format you want to use—"WAV," for example—from the "Save as type" drop-down menu.

    • 5

Click the "Save" button. Audacity merges the songs and saves them as one audio file.

Tips & Warnings

  • To export audio in the MP3 format, install the LAME MP3 encoder for Audacity.
