How to Draw in Millimeters in AutoCAD

You can modify most of the settings in AutoCAD, including the measurement unit being used for your drawings. If you need to draw with millimeters as your unit of measurement, such as when creating drawings of small objects, you can configure AutoCAD to do so. When specifying your unit of measure, however, it is important to modify your insertion scale as well, to ensure that any additional content inserted into your drawing is also scaled to millimeters.

Instructions

    • 1

      Launch AutoCAD.

    • 2

Click "Format" at the top of the window.

    • 3

      Click "Units."

    • 4

Click the "Type" drop-down menu in the Length section of the window, and then click "Decimal."

    • 5

Click the "Units to Scale Inserted Content" drop-down menu in the Insertion Scale section of the window, and then click "Millimeters."

    • 6

Click "OK" at the bottom of the window.

Tips & Warnings

  • You do not need to specify a value on the Type drop-down menu in the Angle section of the window, as the angle measurement is not affected by your chosen unit of measure.
