How to Label in ArcMap

The ArcMap program allows users to view, edit, and create geospatial data. Users can create maps of various geological areas located throughout the world. Within this program, users can also add labels to point of interest to give the map readers more information that pertains to what they are viewing. The draw tool allows users to place the labels in various points on the map.

Instructions

      Open the table of contents on the left hand side of the current map display. Right click the layer you want to label and click "Properties."

      Click on the "Labels" tab. The "Labels" window will open, which shows the different options you have when using labels in ArcMap.

      Click the arrow next to the Label Field to display the different types of labels in the program. Click on the type of label that you want to use and then click "OK."

      Click the label button on the Draw toolbar to select the labeling option. If the Draw toolbar is not available, select it from the View category in the main menu at the top of the screen.

      Click the "Place Label" selection to place your label on the map. You also have the option of selecting the "Automatically Find Best Placement" option and the ArcMap program will automatically place the label on the map for you.

      Click "Choose A Style" to change the font, color and effects of the label that you placed on your map.

      Save your project by either using the keyboard shortcut "Ctrl" and "S" or select "Save" from the main menu. If you do not save your work, everything will be lost when you close the program.
