How to Make Skateboards With Things That You Have at Home

Skateboarding is an activity that many children and adults have enjoyed for many years. Long before skateboards were officially on the market, children made homemade skateboards from a piece of wood and a metal roller skate. The thrill of rolling down the sidewalk with an alternative to roller skates had begun. The look was not as clean and sharp as manufactured skateboards but they moved along the pavement with ease. Make your own homemade skateboard using the same process used during the 1960s.

  • 1-by-6-inch board, 24 inches long
  • Pencil
  • Band saw or skill saw

Instructions

    • 1

Place the 1-by-6-inch board on a flat work surface. Draw a curve on one end of the board to indicate the front of the skateboard.

    • 2

Draw a flat curve to indicate the back of the skateboard at the desired length. The length of the skateboard should be between 18 and 24 inches long.

    • 3

Cut the curves from the skateboard with a band saw or skill saw.

    • 4

Sand the edges on the top and bottom of the board to remove all splinters. Continue to sand the edges until they are round.

    • 5

Remove the center screw on the metal roller skate. Separate the two sections. Take off the toe guard on the front end of the skate and the heal guard on the back to make the two pieces flat.

    • 6

Determine the front and back of the cut skateboard board. Place the board on a flat work surface so the front of the board is down.

    • 7

Center the front of the metal roller skate approximately 3 inches from the front of the skateboard board and between the two side edges. Screw it in to secure it into place. Repeat the process with the back piece of the metal roller skate on the back of the board.

Tips & Warnings

  • Customize the skateboard by painting or drawing a design on the surface of the board.
