How to Make Pop Art With Paint

After Andy Warhol took a few snapshots of a soup can, his 15 minutes of fame extended far further as the art world cemented his style of design as pop art. These tiled images became iconic, but you don’t need to be a celebrated artist to create them. Instead, create your own pop art with Windows Paint and a favorite photo. Paint’s quick image placement and canvas set-up let you feature your own favorite things in your pop art to enjoy for 15 minutes or more.

Instructions

    • 1

Launch Windows Paint. Click the drop-down icon on the top-left corner of the screen. Select “Open.” Browse to an image to use for the pop art and double-click it.

    • 2

Click the “Select” button’s small drop-down menu on the ribbon. Choose “Select all.” When a blue, dotted line surrounds your picture, click the “Copy” button on the ribbon.

    • 3

Click the drop-down arrow in the top-left corner again and select “Properties.” Enter new dimensions for the canvas that will have a width and height wide and long enough for your pop art canvas – enough to fit at least a 2-by-2 or even 3-by-3 inch tile of the current picture. For example, if your current image is 6 inches by 4 inches, increase the canvas size to 12 inches by 8 inches or 18 inches by 12 inches. Paint resizes the canvas, and you see white space.

    • 4

Click the “Paste” button on the ribbon. The second copy of the picture pastes in.

    • 5

Drag the picture next to the first so it abuts the first with its left edge up against the first’s right edge. There should be no white space between the two. Do not click off the picture until you have it exactly positioned – once you click off the image, Paint thinks you’re finished and “flattens” it to the canvas, rendering it inaccessible.

    • 6

Click the “Paste” button again. Drag the next copy of the picture directly below the first so the third picture’s left edge aligns with the canvas’s left edge and the third picture’s top edge aligns with the first picture’s bottom edge.

    • 7

Repeat with the fourth picture to fill in the square or any additional images to complete the pop art tiled look.

Tips & Warnings

  • Although these instructions explain how to make a specific kind of pop art that the “King of Pop Art” Andy Warhol made famous, you can use many of Paint’s other tools to create pop art of your own. Take a cue from Warhol and create a series of different images, or use the “Airbrush” option under the brush menu to create a graffiti/tagging design that looks like spray paint. You can also choose neon colors and layer items from Paint’s shapes collection for an eye-catching design.
