Roses, followed by carnations, are the most popular flowers for Valentine's Day.

On Valentine's Day, carnations often are given as demonstrations of love to friends, family members and romantic partners. As you search for carnations for a Valentine's Day flower arrangement, consider the color. Light-red carnations denote respect and admiration, while dark-red carnations signify the giver's love. White carnations are meant to impart love to the recipient, and matching them with red carnations can create a powerful arrangement for a loved one. Ask a florist about care instructions to keep carnations alive as long as possible.

Instructions

  1. Candy-Filled Carnation Arrangements

    • 1

Opt for a clear glass or plastic vase. Choose a colorful ribbon to decorate the outside of the vase. Apply super glue and smooth ribbon over the exterior of the vase. Allow it to dry. Tie a bow in the center of the vase using another color of ribbon, if desired.

    • 2

Cut the stems on the carnations in the few hours before you intend to deliver the flower arrangement. Ensure that the head of the flower barely extends beyond the top of the vase.

    • 3

Fill the vase with cinnamon candies or candy hearts to add a passionate or affectionate touch to the flower arrangement. Purchase one or two bags of candy, depending on the size of the vase.

    Heart-Shaped Arrangement

    • 4

Use floral foam to create a heart-shaped flower arrangement. Create a heart shape from the floral foam using a toothpick to gently cut into the foam.

    • 5

Cut the stems of the carnations 1 to 2 inches below the head of the flower. Use a toothpick to punch a hole into the floral foam. Insert the stem of the first carnation into that hole. Continue the process, arranging the carnations about the foam. Ensure that the flower heads completely cover the floral foam.

    • 6

Soak the arrangement in water for about 10 minutes to encourage longevity.

    Vase Flower Arrangement

    • 7

Cut 1 or 2 inches off the bottom of the stems of carnations at a 45-degree angle. Remove all leaves on the carnations that will end up submerged in water to prevent bacteria growth.

    • 8

Fill the vase with warm water to encourage longevity. Insert the carnations into the vase. Mix the red carnations among the white carnations to avoid clustering the same color together. Add baby's breath to the arrangement for an additional decorative touch.

    • 9

Tie a ribbon around the vase. Ask a florist for a card to insert into the arrangement, if desired.

Tips & Warnings

  • If decorating the vase for a candy-filled arrangement, leave a portion of the vase at the top without decorations. If the vase is clear, the recipient can see the candies inside.

  • Floral foam can be found at craft stores.

  • Do not put so many flowers into the vase that removing them is difficult.
