How to Make a Guitar Pick Pendant

Make your hole in the center of the wider portion of the guitar pick.

Making a guitar pick pendant gives you something cool to put on a necklace or bracelet and lets you turn an old pick into new jewelry. Guitar picks, otherwise known as plectrums, are small triangular pieces of material which are used to strike the strings on a guitar. Many guitar picks made into necklaces are fake, metallic ones. Turning a real guitar pick into a pendant is a more authentic and personal way to make an adornment for your necklace or bracelet. Make a guitar pick into a pendant by punching a hole in it and threading some wire through it.

Instructions

    • 1

Find a suitable surface to pierce your guitar pick on. Either use a surface that is unlikely to be damaged (or something like a workbench where it doesn’t matter), or put something down to protect your surface. Remember, you are going to be driving a sharp object through a plastic guitar pick, so you are unlikely to be able to leave your surface unscathed.

Put your pick on top of your work surface. Make a slight mark in your pick where you wish the hole to be. Push down lightly just in case your positioning is off. Aim for the center of the wider end of the pick, but choose a different position if you wish. For example, if you select one of the wider corners, your pick will hand diagonally instead of straight down. Mark the pick in your desired location by pushing down enough to make a mark.

Push the needle, nail or awl through the guitar pick. Use force to get the sharpened end of your tool through the surface of the pick. You are looking to create a hole of at least 0.08 inches in length so you can get the wire through. Punch through the pick and then remove your sharp object.

Thread one end of your craft wire through the hole. Pull the wire through so that a roughly equal amount of wire is visible on each side of the guitar pick. Bend both sides up so that their tips meet in the middle, above the pick. Pinch the two bits of wire with a pair of pliers, around 1/4 inch above the plectrum. Keep hold of the wire with your pliers, and bend the end section back around so they point downwards, towards the pick. The craft wire should have a distinctive loop in the top where it is bent around the pliers.

Coil the ends of the wire around the short length of wire between the pliers and the pick. Wrap the free wire tightly around the short length of wire to create a tightly coiled effect. Tuck the end of the wire in if possible, or file it down using a metal nail file. Remove the pliers to reveal a loop in the top of the craft wire. Push the necklace or bracelets cord through this hole to add your pendant to jewelry.
