How to Use Drones in Audiotool

In music, drones are monotonous notes that are held for an extended period of time. Though drones generally aren't tonally dynamic -- they usually hold one key -- they can add tension and dark under tones to your music. And if you use Audiotool's online audio editor to construct your audio tracks, you can play droned notes with any of the synthesizers in the application's environment and give your music a darker feel.

Instructions

    • 1

Navigate your browser to Audiotool's website, then click on its "Launch App" button. Select one of the templates from the program's start page, or simply select the "Empty" option.

    • 2

Select one of the instruments from the "Synth" portion of Audiotool's side panel then drag the instrument into the program's main window. The timeline window will appear at the bottom of the program.

    • 3

Double-click on any portion of the timeline to insert a new note region. Move your cursor of the right side of the note region then drag it to the point where you'd like your song to end.

    • 4

Drag the right side of the note region to the point where you'd like your track's audio to begin. After setting up your note region, the timeline window's keyboard overlay will appear on the right side of the window.

    • 5

Click inside of the note region to insert a note from your synthesizer. Drag the note up or down to set it's key -- use the notes on the piano overlay to guide you.

    • 6

Drag the note to the beginning point in the note region where you'd like the drone to begin, while keeping the note on the same row as the desired key on the piano. Drag the right side of the note to the point where you'd like the note to end -- drag it to the end of the note region if desired.

    • 7

Select the "Save Draft" option from the Audiotool's "File" heading to save your project's progress.
