How to Accessorize Fireplace Built-Ins
If you are lucky enough to have a fireplace with built-ins, you are probably looking for a way to decorate that creates a focal point of the entire fireplace area. Assess the space. The main limit is going to be the size of the built-ins. Be sure to also consider the weight limit of shelves.

Select a theme. Look at the detailing of the fireplace the built-ins and the mantle. Are they contemporary or traditional? Country or Spanish? If you have decorated the mantle, you may want to continue the same theme onto the built-ins. Continuing the same decorating theme from the fireplace and mantle to the built-ins will make the entire area the focal point of the room.

Start decorating. A general rule of thumb is that the more contemporary the space, the fewer accessories should be used. Consider pieces of modern sculpture, a collection of glassware or objects collected while traveling for a contemporary area. For a more traditional setting consider the use of books, sculptures and flowers.
