Use larger needles for a more open weave.

A handmade wool shawl is an elegant complement to any ensemble. Simultaneously dress up and add warmth to an outfit with bare arms or shoulders by wrapping yourself in your crocheted wool shawl. Make your own comfortable, versatile shawl with soft wool yarn and basic crocheting skills. Customize this project to your liking by using bold color combinations, opting for high-quality or specialty yarns, or adding embellishments such as tassels upon completion.

Instructions

    • 1

Tie a slipknot at the end of your length of yarn. Slip the loop over your hook and tighten to secure. Leave enough room for the knot to slide easily along the length of the hook.

    • 2

Wrap yarn around the hook above the slipknot. Use the hook to secure wrapped yarn in place, then use your fingers to guide the lower loop over the upper loop and off the end of the hook. This “chain stitch” will form the majority of your shawl. Repeat until you’ve made a chain approximately 65 inches long or the length of your choosing. This chain will be the widest part of the shawl.

    • 3

Turn the work over. Work the next row in the opposite direction.

    • 4

Begin each row after the initial chain with a single crochet decrease. Single crochet stitch across the row until you reach the last two stitches. Decrease single crochet on the last two stitches, and follow with a single chain stitch. Turn the work over and repeat. Each row will get increasingly shorter and ultimately form a triangle shape.

    • 5

Trim the tail of yarn, leaving 6 to 12 inches after completing your final stitch. Use your hook to pull the tail through the final loop, then pull tail to secure. Use a yarn needle to weave the tail of the yarn into your knitted stitches to hide it.
