How to Do Well in Phone Interviews

How to Do Well in Phone Interviews thumbnail
Treat a phone interview like an in-person interview.

Some companies perform preliminary interviews over the phone as part of a candidate screening process. These companies conduct the interviews with potential candidates to find out information that is not found on the resume. Sometimes a phone interview is conducted with applicants who do not live in the area or are unavailable for an immediate in-person interview.

Instructions

Answer the phone promptly and professionally. Do not pick up the phone chewing gum or answer by saying “yeah.” Take the phone call in a quiet place in your home where you will not be interrupted or disturbed. If you are calling in for the interview, call a few minutes before your scheduled interview time.

    • 2

Walk while you talk. Do not let yourself get comfortable sitting down because the relaxed, laid back tone may come through in your voice during the interview. Stand up and slowly walk around a bit, even if it is in a circle or back and forth in the room.

    • 3

Smile. Your smile will give you confidence and that will come through in your voice during the interview. If necessary, look in a mirror throughout your interview to ensure you are smiling.

    • 4

Speak clearly and slowly. Speak directly into the receiver.

    • 5

Be prepared. Know about the job you are applying for, associated responsibilities, the company and how your experience will fit within both the job description and the company‘s needs. Keep research notes about the company in front of you for reference during the interview.

    • 6

Ask questions. Based on your research about the company, ask some detailed questions about the position. Ask the interviewer about why the position you are applying for is an essential part of the company’s operation.
