How to Make Photographs Into Comics

Comics are a form of visual storytelling that can be made with any art medium, from paintings and drawings, to digital images and photographs. Personalized photo comic books make for a creative gift idea, while one-sheet comic strips can be used as greeting cards, party invitations or thank-you notes. Although many companies sell special comic-book software that allows you to automatically create comics from a series of images, the same comic effects can be created using any photo-editing software.

Instructions

    • 1

Shoot a series of photographs to use in your comic. You want your comic to tell a story, so the pictures should fit together in a series with a definite beginning, middle and end. If you do not want to take new photos for your comic, search through the photos you already have to find the best way to tell your story.

    • 2

Transfer the pictures from your camera to your computer and save them to a new folder. Copy any additional pictures you want to use to the same folder.

    • 3

Open a new project in your photo-editing software of choice. Make sure the canvas matches the size that you want your comic to be. For a full-sized comic book, set the canvas to 8 1/2" x 11.''

    • 4

Copy and paste the first image of your comic as a new layer on your canvas. Setting it as its own layer allows you to manipulate it freely without altering the rest of the picture. Adjust the size and position of the first image accordingly, using the crop tool if necessary.

    • 5

Draw a border around the first photo in your comic to make it appear more like a comic panel and to separate it visually from other panels.

    • 6

Add a word bubble using the shape tool. Most photo-editing programs have a word-bubble shape loaded into the program; however, you can also create your own by laying down an oval then using the line tool to draw a flag off of the oval.

    • 7

Repeat this process until you have filled the page with comic panels, then save the file and share your comic with the world.

Tips & Warnings

  • Use your photo-editing software's effects tools to create special effects like superpowers, or add props by copying and pasting objects into the image.

  • If you want to change the background of a photo, use the selection tool to cut out the subject of a photo and paste it over a new background.
