How to Dress Up as a Tap Dancer
Tap is a style of dance that mixes visual entertainment with audible entertainment in the form of the rhythmic clicks of the tap dancers' shoes on the hard dance floor. Tap is a dance style that is often implemented by a chorus line, a group of similarly dressed dancers who provide backup dancing for the main cast in a musical. If you want to dress up as a tap dancer for Halloween or a costume party, replicating the chorus line look makes for a unique but recognizable outfit.

1
Select a pair of leggings to wear under your skirt or shorts. Nylon leggings or flesh-colored leggings create a sexy tap dancer costume for an adult, while dark leggings are ideal for a more modest outfit or for a child's costume.
-
2
Wear a pair of dance shoes or high heels to replicate the look of tap shoes. It is not necessary to wear actual tap shoes with the taps attached; the click of the shoes can be a bother to other guests at a party, and can damage some floors.

3
Wear a pair of shorts or a short skirt. Tap dancer outfits often feature short garments that are designed to show off the dancers' legs.
-
4
Select a collared vest that fits tightly around the arms. As with shorts, tap dancer outfits often show off the arms of the dancers, either with a vest or by wearing a top with form-fitting arms, and the formal attire look is a popular choice.
-
5
Secure a tie under the collar of the vest. A bow tie or a standard office tie are both effective details for a tap dancer costume.
-
6
Wear a pair of gloves that extend to midwrist.
-
7
Select a top hat that matches your outfit. Hats worn by a group of tap dancers are often worked into the choreography.
-
8
Carry a cane in one hand. As with a top hat, a cane is a popular element in formal attire dance costumes. Canes work particularly well with tap dance because they are able to replicate the sound of tap shoes when worked into a dance, making a cane a perfect complement to your costume.
