How to Get Girls Started in Cheerleading Competitions
Whether you have a daughter, niece, sister or granddaughter interested in joining a youth cheerleading squad or she is in high school pursuing the sport, getting started in cheerleading competitions is an option for girls all ages. Competing in cheerleading events and competitions requires dedication to the sport as well as efficient communication and teamwork with all squad members.

Ask the girl about her interest in cheerleading and why she would like to begin competing.

Call area schools or your local community or recreational center to inquire about upcoming cheerleading competitions, age groups and current requirements for joining a squad outside of school.

Visit the location of the meetings to register your daughter, sister or niece for the upcoming cheerleading class or tryout session. Attend local cheerleading competitions and tryouts with her to ensure that she is interested in the sport and enjoys it.

Invite a friend of the girl's who is also interested in cheerleading, or a member of the cheerleading squad she is joining, to help practice moves and routines.

Practice consistently until the day of tryouts with basic cheerleading moves. For more advanced tryouts and cheerleading groups, back handsprings and flips (both front and back) may be required to join the squad.

Create your own cheerleading dance moves and routines to help prepare for tryouts and to be prepared to perform routines on request.

Attend the tryout with the girl. She will be asked to complete basic and traditional cheerleading moves and possibly perform her own cheerleading routine.
