How to Stroke in GIMP

The free graphics editor GIMP allows you to stroke a path in GIMP, the path being a set of lines assigned by you. You can create any shape of path, and you can even customize the stroke style to meet the needs of your specific project. For example, you can use the Paths tool to create a triangle, and then you can adjust the stroke style to be a red, one-pixel-wide line.

Instructions

    • 1

Launch the free software and click on "File." Select either "New" or "Open," depending on if you want to create a new file or if you want to open an existing workbook. Follow the corresponding prompts, and a GIMP image workbook appears.

    • 2

Click the Paths tool located in the main toolbox.

    • 3

Click your cursor down in the workbook where you want your first line to begin, and a circle temporarily marks the spot. Place additional marks at every corner you want your path to have.

    • 4

Click "Edit" and "Stroke Path." Adjust the line width by increasing or decreasing the pixel size, and change the color of the stroke by clicking within the toolbox on the foreground color. Click "Stroke" when satisfied.

    • 5

Save your edited workbook by clicking on "File" and "Save As."

Tips & Warnings

  • To remove the temporary path lines and circular placeholders, click on any other tool within the toolbox and the path lines will go away.

  • If you click away from Design mode in the main toolbox for the Paths tool, your tool may appear to be malfunctioning since its capabilities are different. Stay on Design mode to insert a path to be stroked.
