How to: GIF Format for Transparent Background

MS Paint, which comes standard with Microsoft Windows, doesn't have the ability to save GIFs with transparent backgrounds. To create graphics in the GIF format with transparent backgrounds, you need graphics software such as Photoshop, Paint NET or GIMP. Using these programs, you can select and delete an image's background. While JPEGs and many other image formats save the image with a solid background color, the GIF file type preserves the image's transparency.

Instructions

    • 1

Open your image in Photoshop, and use selection tools or quick mask mode to separate the image from the background. Delete the image's background to make the background transparent. Click on "Save for Web" in the "File" menu, and choose the GIF format. Click "OK" to save the image.

Download and install the GIMP graphics software if you want a free alternative to Photoshop. Make sure the image is in the RGB color format, and add an alpha channel, or transparency layer, if the image doesn't already have one. Select the background using GIMP's lasso, magic wand or color selection tools. Delete the background, and save the image as a GIF.

Install Paint.NET for another free way to create transparent GIFs. Open your image, select the image's background and delete it. Save your image as a GIF to keep the image's background transparent.
