How to Leave a Job Graciously

Leaving your current job for a better career opportunity can be a bittersweet moment for individuals and co-workers. Although you may not have any plans to return to your current employer after retiring, changing jobs or temporarily leaving the workforce, leaving your job in a graceful manner may help keep yourself in good standing with your current employer. Keeping good lines of communication open with your current employer will help “keep your foot in the door” if at some point you wish to return and retain the employer as a solid reference for future job opportunities.

Instructions

    • 1

Read the company's employee handbook. Follow any guidelines pertaining to voluntary resignations and plan ahead to meet these expected guidelines.

    • 2

Compose an official resignation letter for your supervisor and co-workers. Include your reasoning for leaving, expected last day of work and expressions of gratitude for the employment opportunity. Keep the letter as professional as possible and avoid including negative or divisive language.

    • 3

Send out the resignation letter to the appropriate departments and persons in a timely manner. Certain employers may require a resignation notice two weeks or more in advance, in order to adequately hire and prepare your replacement. Do not boast about your new job or make negative statements with regard to your departure.

    • 4

Talk with your supervisor about finishing up projects and offer help during the transition. Convey your willingness to make the transition as smooth as possible. While speaking to your boss or the human resources department, resolve any issues pertaining to unused vacation, sick time or personal day compensation.

    • 5

Prepare your work area and remove any personal items on or before your last day of work.

    • 6

Avoid giving in to employment counteroffers. Respectfully decline offers that may entice you to stay. Act gracious during the exit interview and avoid airing trivial complaints.

    • 7

Provide your contact information to the HR department, supervisor and close employees before you leave.
