How to Make Your Sneakers Holographic

Holographic foils give old sneakers a new sparkle.

Anyone can change a boring pair of sneakers into an art form by making them holographic. A holographic design can be applied in several ways, most commonly through the use of a holographic laminated paper or the process of foil stamping. Applying holographic foil sheets to the fabric of your shoes is recommended because it is efficient and cost-effective. The foil is washable and durable, making it a practical yet artistic material to add sparkle to a pair of sneakers.

Things You'll Need

• Holographic foil sheets
• Wet glue
• Brush or sponge

Instructions

1. Buy holographic foil sheets or foil rolls from your local craft store and cut out foil shapes you want to apply to your sneakers. Apply the wet glue to back side of foil shapes with the brush or sponge.

2. Place the foil glue side down on the surface of the shoe while it is still wet. Smooth out the foil and apply pressure without moving the foil too much.

3. Dry the holographic foil by letting it sit for one hour. Peel the foil paper off the shoe and away from the clear backing, leaving the desired foil design on the sneaker.

4. Apply more foil if adhesive on the shoe isn't covered or you want to add more designs.

Tips & Warnings

• Create your own designs by applying glue to the foil in different shapes or patterns.

• Foil will stick to wet or dry glue. The glue has a tacky quality and grabs the foil when it is rubbed.

• Use a liquid adhesive for sneakers, making them washable and more durable.

• Some adhesives change the texture of fabric.

• Complete the project the same day if you live in a dry climate. Taking longer can cause the glue to dry too quickly, making it more difficult to use.
