How to Decoupage Tiles

Decoupage is the art of adhering paper to another object to decorate it. Almost any surface can be decoupaged as long as it doesn't chemically react with the bonding agent (usually a diluted form of white craft glue). When embellishing the surface of a tile, it is extremely important to prepare the tile surface and the paper you will be using before you start the process. A few simple preparatory steps can mean the difference between a beautiful finished product and a scrunched-up mess.

Instructions

    • 1

Sand the front of the tile with 150-grit sandpaper to give the surface a better surface to adhere to. Blow the grit off or brush it off with a foam brush.

    • 2

Cut out all of the images or designs you will be using. Dry fit these over the tile to make sure your cuts are correct. If you have a thick image, cut the back at a 45-degree angle to minimize the amount of white showing on the finished product.

    • 3

Mix one part white glue to four parts water in a drinking glass or canning jar. Shake it gently or stir it with a foam brush until the glue has dissolved.

    • 4

Paint the surface of the tile with the glue mixture using a foam brush. The layer of glue should be thin and translucent.

    • 5

Place the paper image on the tile and smooth it with your fingers.

    • 6

Spread a layer of glue mixture over the top of the image. Let it dry.

    • 7

Paint a layer of sealant over the dried image to protect it from accidental damage.
