Smooth out clumps and unevenness from your down comforter.

Continuous use of your bed's comforter often results in a clumpy appearance, which occurs when the filling of the comforter gradually shifts to a specific area. A clumpy comforter creates a distorted appearance as the filling builds up on one side, reducing the lifespan of your home bedding. Thankfully, those unattractive lumps can be smoothed out through at-home care and regular bedding maintenance to restore the even, smooth appearance of the comforter. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

Take your comforter to the dry cleaners monthly. If you use the same comforter every day, it wears out faster, and results in the unsightly lumpy appearance. Down comforters require dry cleaning, as they are vulnerable to permanent damage if machine washed at home.

Lay the comforter flat on the bed and grab its bottom edge. Raise your arms up and quickly move them down to snap the comforter up and down.

    • 3

Push against the clumpy section with your hand's heel to smooth out the down filling.

    • 4

Insert your comforter into a large dryer, and then set the drying cycle to "Air Dry." Place two to three tennis balls or dryer balls in the dryer, and press "Power" or "Start" on the machine. The air-drying cycle revives the clumpy comforter, and the tennis balls or dryer balls bounce around in the machine to eliminate the clumps.

Turn the position of the comforter from the head of the bed to the foot of the bed. Rotating redistributes the weight pressed against the comforter and reduces clumping.
