Instructions

    • 1

Turn off your dryer and unplug it from its power source.

    • 2

Take the exhaust tube off the dryer and the wall and clean it out. Use the wand extension on your vacuum to suck all the lint out of the tube. Be careful not to puncture or tear the exhaust tube while vacuuming it.

    • 3

Run the dryer vent tool through the duct in the wall to clean the vent of any debris or lint that is blocking it. This works best if your dryer is located near an exterior wall so that the duct is not overly long. Thread the tool into the vent as far as you can get it to clean right to the end of the pathway. If you can access the vent with your vacuum, try to vacuum out any dust and lint the tool misses.

Call a professional to come and clean your dryer vent if your vent is much longer than the tool that you have for self cleaning a vent. The tools that people buy for self-servicing a vent aren't suitable for cleaning out exhaust ducts that run up a tall wall, over or under other rooms before venting to the outdoors.

Take your vacuum outside and also vacuum out the dryer vent from the exit point on your exterior wall. Unscrew the vent plate if it is screwed to the wall, or just flip it up to access the interior if it is on a hinge.

  • Clean your vents as often as indicated in your service manual. Not only will this extend the life of your dryer, but it will also help reduce the hazards of fires starting in your dryer.
