Birdhouses are hung with wire or rope.

If you are an avid bird watcher or simply want to add color and variety to your garden, a birdhouse is an ideal addition to any yard. Birdhouses are commonly constructed out of driftwood and other recycled materials, though they are just as sturdy and reliable as new materials. If you purchased a driftwood birdhouse or constructed one yourself, the final step is hanging it properly to attract neighborhood and traveling birds.

Instructions

    • 1

Locate the hook on your birdhouse. Most birdhouses have a metal ring on the roof to thread a rope or wire for hanging. Run a length of wire or rope through the metal hook.

    • 2

If you do not have a metal hook on your birdhouse, use a hot glue gun to affix a length of bent wire or rope to the sides of the birdhouse. When pulled, the wire or rope should form a U-shape. Ensure that the glue is completely dry before hanging.

    • 3

Locate a tree with relatively low hanging branches. Use a branch that is at least an inch thick to prevent breakage. Loop the rope or wire over the end of the branch to a secure position near the base of the tree.

    • 4

Place a bowl of bird seed beneath the birdhouse to attract birds. You may also want to sprinkle a few seeds on the floor of the birdhouse.

Tips & Warnings

  • Be patient. It may take a few seasons for your local birds to locate and select your birdhouse as a nest.

  • Place the birdhouse where it is easily accessible to you. You will need to clean the birdhouse out after each season.

  • Place the birdhouse away from a busy street or frequent human activity. Too much activity will deter birds from selecting your birdhouse as a nesting area.
