How to Drape a Muslim Dress

Many women choose colorful and color coordinated headscarves.

A Muslim dress that drapes is known as an Islamic headscarf or "hijab." A Muslim headscarf is worn by Muslim women although not every Muslim woman wears a headscarf. The style and manner of dress of a headscarf depends on a person's culture, as there is no one Muslim style of headscarf. However, all Muslim headscarves should accomplish the same task when draped: They should cover the hair, neck and ears. As long as those areas are covered, you can accessorize and color coordinate as much as you want.

Instructions

    • 1

Drape the pashmina over your head with one side significantly longer than the other.

    • 2

Fold the pashmina behind the neck and pin the two sides together with a safety pin. When pinning the back make sure that the front part of the pashmina remains snug around your head.

    • 3

Take the longer ends of the scarf behind the neck and bring it toward the top of your head. Keep the edges of the scarf slightly above the forehead area. Continue bringing the scarf around toward the other end of your head. Crease out any wrinkles with your other hand.

    • 4

Bring the pashmina under your chin and continue clearing out creases with your hand along the way. Wrap the scarf once more around your head.

    • 5

Pin the remaining end of the pashmina at the back of your head.

Tips & Warnings

  • Use a headscarf "cap" to keep pashminas made out of slippery material in place.

  • If using a cap, color coordinate it with your outfit and pashmina. Make sure the cap shows a little bit above your forehead then wear the hijab the same way.

  • Use decorated headscarf pins instead of a sewing pin to accessorize your hijab.

  • Choose plain, patterned or beaded pashminas depending on your outfit and the occasion.
