Instructions

    • 1

Ground the room with an area rug. An area rug adds interest, color and warmth to the floor of the space. Choose a rug that works with the color scheme or style of the space.

    • 2

Place throw pillows and blankets on a bed, sofa or chairs. Choose pillows and blankets made of soft fabrics and that feature designs and colors that complement the style of the room. Haphazardly arrange the pillows and drape the blanket, or set them out in a neat and orderly form.

    • 3

Add pictures to the space. Place personal photographs in frames that accent the style of the room, and set them out on tabletops or hang them on the walls to create a collage effect. In addition to or instead of personal photographs, include framed paintings that also complement the style of the room.

    • 4

Display personal collections of heirloom items or keepsakes from your travels. Place these items in a visually appealing manner on wall shelves, on tabletops or bookcases, or on the top of an entertainment stand.

    • 5

Add interest to tabletops with centerpieces such as candles and flowers. Also consider placing pine cones, seashells or glass beads on attractive trays or in bowls to display.

    • 6

Hang coverings on the windows. Window coverings add privacy to the space and also add to the design. Choose hard coverings, such as shutters or blinds, or opt for soft coverings, such as drapes, cafe curtains or sheers.

Tips & Warnings

  • Avoid over-accessorizing, so the room won't appear garish.
