How to Obtain a Drama Teacher's License

How to Obtain a Drama Teacher's License thumbnail
Success in theater takes hard work and practice.

The actors on stage receive the praise of the audience at the end of the show. Unnoticed, though, are the hard work and instruction necessary to prepare the actors. Drama teachers are highly trained to understand all aspects of the performance, from scripting and musical score to lighting and set design. While a specific license or certification is not needed to teach drama in primary or secondary schools, having the proper degree and experience is of benefit in helping you land better jobs with larger productions.

Instructions

    • 1

Obtain specific instruction on theater education in a master's degree program. A bachelor's degree in education or a related field is helpful, and sometimes mandatory, when applying for a master's program. The advanced degree trains you in educational theory specific to drama classes. The coursework involved teaches you about set design, musical direction and vocal exercises.

Apply for teacher certification in the state in which you wish to work. Many states require that applicants take a written test and give an oral presentation prior to receiving a license. Check with the state's education department to determine whether a student-teaching license is needed prior to seeking full-time certification.

    • 3

Complete a final project and a student teaching assignment. Work with graduate school administrators to earn a spot in a classroom. Seek an opportunity to produce a play on stage with students or a community theater group. This often satisfies the final project for your master's degree.

Tips & Warnings

  • Your school district might accept fewer education qualifications if you possess practical experience. If your administration is amenable to hands-on experience in lieu of classroom credits, apply to attend summer drama teaching workshops. This might prove more valuable than investing in a master's program.
